Knowing Where I’m At (Part 2)

I browsed through all of our class’ assignments which are existing and accessible. Lo and behold! A lot of us are quite good! I was pleasantly surprised to see so many photos depicting deep emotions and narrating stories that tug even the toughest of heartstrings. Sure, I have my own favorites (which I will be sharing shortly) but honestly, it was difficult to pick. One of the things that impressed me is that some of us are technical already. Full disclosure: I try to be technical but it doesn’t come naturally and come out as pilit and there is no hiding the fact I have a lot to learn. Perfect example is now, as I write this blog, I am carefully picking out technical jargon that may sound stupid or brilliant depending on who is reading it. I digress. One thing is for sure, I am truly humbled to be part of this class and I look forward to our next activities. So without further ado, here are my personal picks in no particular order.

Michelle Alcazar

Her pictures were nice and I would expect that her work is a crowd favorite. I liked this one the most because of the raw emotion and story it is trying to tell me.

Kevin Bendian

My Cebu! Always beautiful on photos (and in real life, of course). This photo was taken on one of the popular places here and he was able to capture the classy and rustic vibe this place is known for.

Neil Malgapo

It’s a beautiful picture that might have been heavily edited. Again, here we are at the technical part. I still feel it’s one of the best in our lot. Eternal sunshine withstanding.

Erik Fruto

Here comes my favorite photo of them all. I told you this list wasn’t in any particular order but yes, I do have a favorite among favorites! For one, the room seems to be dark but there is good natural light from the outside. Pretty good! And I love the way he captured her smile – that moment she was genuinely happy. Oh and the story! It seems he was peeking at her and that is great storytelling.

Hannah Kim

Cute baby shoes but was heavily edited that it has become too warm. Still one of the best for me because I like the concept

Maria Aimee Cabingao

I love cats! And the layers of this photo, too!

JP Sison

Again, it’s the story! Of a guy taking a picture of a girl he fancies. Although truth is it IS bordering creepy but hey, different strokes for different folks. I do hope they ended up together one way or the other. Did they?

Chelsea Caritativo

I can’t really say in particular why this photo appealed to me. Probably because it seems she is at a crossroads. Of staying and of where to go. The photo elicits an emotion of sadness from me. That is a good photo in my book

Xenia Yacat

This photo has a story. I bet it’s a nice one. I liked the fact that she was able to time it or probably got lucky but that doesn’t matter. It’s a cool picture and one that may have a deeper meaning.

Eli Samonte

Mother and child caught in a tender moment. I would have cropped it differently but then again, as I’ve said I’m not confident with my own techniques (if we could call them that) so I’d skip it. All I can say is that this has stirred emotions in me and for that, I give it merit.

There you have it. My favorites from my class! Now for the hardest part – self reflection. A bit of backstory, I have been constantly mentored by my husband in terms of visual aesthetics. I show him my work and he gives it critique – the good, the bad, the ugly and the in between. And I trust him completely when it comes to stuff like this as it is his forte. However I post my work anyway because sometimes just putting your work out there in spite of its flaws makes you more accepting of your own vulnerabilities. This may have been told by too many blogs before me but I would still say it anyway: I have a long way to go. I can see there are many (say 60%) in class who are far better than I do and seriously, that is ok – great even. Because it is an opportunity for me to explore others’ ideas and see through their lenses how they see their world. We all have a view – a perception – of life and the stories it weaves. I would love to see theirs as I share mine.

Mercedes Olavides

I like to speak from my heart and this project is a wonderful outlet for me to showcase my essays, photographs and art. And I guess a few recipes too from time to time. The kitchen is one of my favorite places at home and I spend a lot of time trying to cook up something delicious but not necessarily healthy (sorry, admittedly health is a work in progress for our household of picky eaters) for my family.
